Banana split trifle has been enjoyed by families for years, as once you master the basic recipe it is an easy dessert to prepare.
Recipe
The first step when preparing a banana split trifle is to make the custard, but why make it when you can purchase a carton ready-made and keep it in the fridge until ready to assemble the trifle? Then prepare other ingredients, and they are.
• 1 small packet of frozen strawberries
• 400 ml fresh whipped cream, with a dash of vanilla essence added.
• 1 sponge cake, cut into cubes
• 2 cups sliced strawberries (fresh for decorating the top)
2 medium ripe bananas
• 1/4 cup of chopped pecans
• Strawberry syrup
Method :
Cut the cake into cubes and place one-third of them in a large glass bowl.
Pour 1/2 of the custard over the top.. Line the sides of the bowl with strawberries then place the remaining thawed strawberries over the pudding cubes. Splash the strawberries liberally with Strawberry Syrup. If you are making it for a festive occasion use Sherry or Port to saturate the cake cubes. Cover with banana slices and the remaining cake cubes. Then cover the whole dish with the custard and decorate the top with whipped cream. Depending on what you have on hand, you may adorn the top of your banana split trifle with more fresh strawberries or pecans. When preparing for a festive lunch this dish is best made the day before, as it allows all the flavours to meld together.
Children’s Parties
When making banana split trifles for a children’s party. make small individual serves. Because children love bananas so much, simplify the dessert by making banana custard to pour over the sponge and chopped bananas and decorate liberally with whipped cream and chocolate sprinkles.
An Easy and Adaptable Recipe
One of the nicest things about banana split trifles is that they can be quickly made without too much work. Purchase the sponge cake from the bakery, and buy a carton of custard from the milk aisle in the supermarket. When whipping the cream it can be sweetened using a sachet of castor sugar. The strawberries can be substituted for pineapple ( 1 can of pineapple pieces drained).
Many older people use jam instead of syrup. So if you have a jar of strawberry jam in the cupboard spread the sponge pieces liberally with the jam. Whipped cream gives your dessert that homemade feel so all you really need to do is to add some whipped cream to the top of the trifle.
